On Paying Attention

A few thoughts on noticing the world

Contents

There is a difference between encountering something and noticing it. We encounter more information than we can possibly remember. What we notice depends on the questions we carry with us.

Beginning with a question

This is a sample essay for the blog’s reading layout. It is not a statement of Brillan’s personal views.

Returning to an idea

Keeping notes can make attention more deliberate. A detail that would otherwise disappear becomes something we can return to, test, and connect with another idea.

A small practice

The practice can be simple. Write down what surprised you. Describe it precisely. Then ask why it seemed surprising in the first place.

Humans are scum and will remain scum for the rest of their lives. The least we can do is to try not to be scum!
